What to Expect
Back pain is a common problem and although rarely serious, can be severely limiting to your life, particularly when you experience radiating nerve pain.
It is confusing to know who to see about pain. It is especially daunting to make this decision if your problem is ongoing.
There is hopeful news...
Understanding how to help people with pain has developed a lot in recent years. Much research has explored what does and doesn't work for back pain. The results are mixed for most treatments, meaning methods such as manipulation, needling and massage seem to be limited in their effectiveness. Preferable is a clinician who provides a diagnosis, a plan, self-management advice and support.
This is what Hedd Piper at Clinig Corff Ystwyth provides.
Hedd is a dedicated clinician who has been helping people with pain in private practice since 2003. By keeping up to date with developments in the world of pain care, he is able to bring to you an objective clinical opinion of what is causing your pain and what to do about it. Since 2016, Hedd has favoured an approach described as Cognitive Functional Therapy. This is a whole-person approach to pain and addresses any and all aspects of your health and life history that has led you to seeking help for pain.
CFT is a departure from the out-dated model of receiving only the type of treatment the therapist is trained in, regardless of whether it is appropriate for your condition or not. CFT involves a collaboration between you and Hedd, rather than you receiving a treatment and hoping it helps.
We use Care Response software to help match your problem to the most effective solution. This means we can be sure of the level of support you need from us even before your first appointment.
Once you have booked your initial consultation we register you onto the cloud based Care Response system. You are sent a questionnaire about your general health and the pain that you have. Hedd will then review the results in preparation for your chat. The answers you provide will help with the decision as to which level of care you should benefit from.
For example:
-
A new episode of moderate to severe low back pain - guidelines tell us that reassurance and time is the best option. Expect advice during the initial phone consultation and a physical examination if needed.
-
An episode of low back pain you have had for a few weeks and doesn't seem to be settling - a few in-person sessions to examine you, prescribe some advice and exercises and a couple of follow-up sessions to monitor progress.
-
A long history of widespread or recurring pain that doesn't seem to respond to treatments that you've tried: An in-depth assessment of your general health, well-being and medical history can establish an underlying cause of your pain. Your course of care may be over a longer time and focus on many different parts of your life.
Your in-person assessment will usually include:
-
Orthopaedic and neurological tests
-
Consideration regarding referral for scans or blood tests
-
A clear explanation of the cause of your pain
-
An explanation of the realistic plan to help you recover
-
A discussion of who you might need to see if it's felt we cannot help you
The Care Response software then keeps in touch with you to monitor your progress by sending out questionnaires 14, 30 and 90 days after you've started care. This enables us to make changes to your plan if needed.
Our passion is to get you back to the things you love by putting you in control.
