Pain Recovery Coaching for Chronic Pain

"I was in real pain, but was reassured by your investigations. As you said, with or without treatment the body would heal itself, and that is exactly what is happening. I have given up the painkillers completely, and am able to walk around more, and generally be a more cheerful member of society".  JR - Aberystwyth

I have an open approach to what we need to focus on to help you overcome or manage your pain.  This is based on over 20 years of experience as a clinician and my ongoing interest in developments in the world of person centred pain care.  This is in addition to my original degree based studies in behavioural science.

Over the years, I have developed my practice into one which does not rely especially heavily on chiropractic manipulation - but rather one which relies on a collaborative approach to overcoming obstacles to your recovery.

Dealing with pain brings with it so many uncertainties.  By exploring your unique story and how your pain developed, we can make important breakthroughs in your understanding of why you may have got stuck with pain.

I have a particular interest in helping:

  • Persistent low back pain (NB - persistent is defined as being longer than 3 months)

  • Ongoing low back pain with nerve pain and unusual sensations such as pins & needles

  • Widespread pain which may need a referral to a rheumatologist

  • Aches and pains that don't seem to respond to chiropractic, osteopathy, acupuncture or massage

  • Getting you back into exercise, work and play

  • Helping you understand a diagnosis someone else may have given you

  • Helping you understand the results of an X-ray or scan and how it may affect you

  • Helping you get rid of unhelpful concepts about back pain dos and don'ts

Our first appointment together will focus on me understanding your situation.  Before this visit you will have completed a health questionnaire which will help me prepare for the session.

This appointment (£85) lasts up to one hour and normally includes:

  • An in-depth chat about the story of the problem

  • Questions about your general health and well-being

  • A discussion of any tests results you may already have

  • A physical examination - including medical, orthopaedic and neurological tests

  • A consideration as to the need to arrange further tests such as a scan or blood tests

  • A discussion about who you should see if it's felt that I cannot help you

Often, if the history of the problem is long and complicated, a second consultation is needed to gather all of this information.

Following this visit, I will process the information and put together a plan for you so that on your next visit we can discuss what can be done to help.  We can discuss how many sessions you may need and how often to come in.  It's common to begin with weekly 45 minute sessions (£50)

Each session gives you practical skills, exercises and strategies to reduce pain and move more.  Sometimes some treatment may help to reduce specific areas of stiffness.  You will be given information and resources to refer to so that your understanding and knowledge builds, giving you the tools to get back to the things you love.
